Initial Appointments ::
We assist students with many different issues including
loneliness, depression, anxiety, crying, sleeping
difficulties, eating difficulties, body image concerns,
addiction, substance abuse, career uncertainty,
concentration difficulties, cultural adjustment, anger
management; family conflict, trauma, abuse and
relationship concerns.
Please call (312)
808-7132 to
set up an initial appointment, or “intake appointment.”
If you indicate you are experiencing an emergency or
crisis we will encourage you come in right away for a
brief crisis meeting. Otherwise we will help you to
schedule an intake appointment.
The intake appointment lasts one and a half hours, and
involves discussing your concerns with a staff member.
Based on information gathered in this meeting we will
make treatment recommendations. In some cases we may
recommend meeting with a staff member here for
psychotherapy and/or a medication evaluation. In other
cases we may recommend a referral to a nearby mental
health professional for treatment. We tailor our
services to the individual and make a treatment plan in
collaboration with each person to best meet his or her
needs.

Counseling and
Psychotherapy ::
Psychotherapy
with a Counseling Center staff member consists of
meeting individually with your counselor, usually once a
week. The meetings usually last 45 minutes each. These
meetings involve talking about your life, identifying
treatment goals, and working toward improving areas of
concern.

Medication Management ::
A psychiatrist is on the IIT main campus 3 hours per
week for evaluations and to prescribe medication.
To receive psychiatric services at the IIT Counseling
Center, students must first complete our initial intake
session and be in treatment for psychological therapy.
Appointments with our psychiatrist and some of the cost
of medications may be covered by the student health
insurance plan.

Referral ::
After the intake appointment, we may recommend a
referral to a treatment provider in your area if this
will best serve your needs.
The Counseling Center provides psychotherapy on a
short-term basis. If you are interested in longer-term,
open-ended psychotherapy, staff at the Counseling Center
can help you locate a treatment provider in your area.
We can often find low-cost services, and can assist
students in finding a provider who is covered by health
insurance.
