First Grade Curriculum Connections

Talking to learn:  Research emphatically concludes that talking is a part of thinking, and of course thinking is part of learning.  Therefore, in the classroom, talking with the teacher and each other plays an integral role in the process of learning.

Hands on Learning:  The best way for conceptual learning to occur is for students to be involved and engaged in hands on learning.

Making Connections:  The best way for students to internalize what they learn is to make connections with real life situations.

Problem Solving:  Children use a variety of strategies to help them solve problems across the curriculum.

Working Together:  In the real world we very seldom work problems out alone.  Working together helps students develop the vital social skill of working and cooperating with others.

I Can Problem Solve (ICPS):  ICPS is a program that empowers students to develop appropriate solutions when conflicts occur.

Learning with Technology:   Students are developing computer literacy through the integration of computer skills with the curriculum.

Connecting Reading and Writing:  The literacy connection is enhanced when reading and writing are learned simultaneously. When this connection is made, students become stronger readers and writers.
