IIT - Student Health Center : About Student Health Center

Insurance Waiver:
The insurance waiver and enrollment deadline for the Fall semester is September 1, 2008.

Immunization Form:

Frequently Asked Questions about the Student Health Center

 

 

  1. What are the student health center’s hours?  Monday-Friday 9am-5pm

 

  1. Can I walk-in to the student health center to be seen?  NO!!  To better serve students, we require you to make an appointment to be seen.  Walk-ins will be seen in EMERGENCIES ONLY!!!

 

  1. What kind of services does the Student Health Center offer?  Diagnose, treat and monitor illness and injuries, both acute and chronic: colds/flu, sprains, rashes, allergies, diabetes, asthma, etc. Order x-rays, tests, lab work, prescribe medications (including birth control pills), administer immunizations and allergy shots, perform women’s health exams, provide health education presentations, administrate the student health insurance, and manage IIT’s immunization program. 

 

  1. Can I be seen at the Student Health Center even if I don’t have the Student Health Insurance?  Yes, all IIT students can be seen at the Student Health Center.

 

  1. How much does it cost to be seen at the Student Health Center?  There is no charge to be seen at the Student Health Center.  There are fees for immunizations and prescription medicines given.  There is a charge for lab work that is billed to your insurance company by Quest Diagnostics, the company we send our lab work to. 

 

  1. What should I do if I need to be seen during the evening or on a weekend?  If it is an emergency and you are on campus, call Public Safety at (312) 808-6363. If you are not on the main campus, go to the nearest Emergency Room.   If it is not an emergency, and you have the Student Health Insurance call the 24 hour informed health line at 1-800-556-1555 for advice.  You can find this number on the student health insurance brochure.  If you do not have the student health insurance, go to your insurance provider’s website and locate a local urgent care center or physician where you can be seen.    

 

  1. When do I need to have my immunization form turned in to the Student Health Center?  By Friday, September 5th.  Registration holds will go on beginning Monday, September 8th for students who have not turned in their forms. 

 

  1. I already have health insurance; do I need to do anything?  Yes, all full-time students are automatically charged $850 for the student health insurance.  If you already have health insurance, go to the Student Health Center’s website at: www.iit.edu/~shc to complete the online waiver for the student health insurance by September 1st.  After completing the waiver, check your “web for students” account 3-4 days later to make sure the $850 student health insurance charge has been removed from your account.  NOTE: If you are on an F1 or J1 visa, you may not waive the IIT student health insurance.

 

  1. If I have the IIT student health insurance, when will I get my health insurance card?  Your card should arrive at the Student Health Center if you’re on an F-1 or J-1 visa by mid-September, where you can pick it up.  Look for notices in IIT Today as to when they are available for you to pick them up. If you are not on an F-1 or J-1 visa you will receive your card at the address provided to IIT by mid-September
  2. What kind of healthcare providers work at the Student Health Center?  The Student Health Center is staffed by a full-time Nurse Practitioner, a full-time Registered Nurse, an administrative assistant/insurance coordinator, and a receptionist.  A local internal medicine physician is at the Student Health Center one morning a week. 

 

  1. What is a Nurse Practitioner?  A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse who has received specialized training and a graduate level degree in diagnosing and treating illnesses and providing health care maintenance.  Nurse Practitioners are qualified to diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries, manage chronic medical conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications and other treatments.

 

  1. What is the contact information for the Student Health Center?  The Student Health Center is located on the Main Campus in Farr Hall room 110 at 3300 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60616.  The phone number is: (312) 808-7100, the fax number is: (312) 808-7131.
