CLEANING OF A METAL

Objectives

1. Students will determine what cleans this particular metal.
2. Understand why the solution clean the metal?

Equipment and Materials

plastic cups
pennies
water
vinegar 
ammonia
hydrochloric acid or muriatic acid
litmus paper (red and blue)

Recommended Strategies

     Form groups of students. Give each group 4 cups, in each cup pour in a small 
amount of each solution (soln.#1- vinegar; soln. #2- ammonia; soln.#3- water; and 
soln. #4- hydrochloric acid).  Give each group pennies and litmus paper. Have 
students decide on their own which solution is acid or base and which solution will 
clean the penny. Discuss why.
