John Ingle Yellott

 

John Ingle Yellott devoted his life’s work to the improved understanding and more efficient utilization of energy. Yellott earned his bachelors and masters degrees from Johns Hopkins University in 1931 and 1933, respectively. He was awarded an honorary degree from Arizona State University in 1986.

Yellott began his professional career as an educator. He served as mechanical engineering faculty at several institutions, including University of Rochester, New York (1933-34); Stevens Institute of Technology (1934-40); Illinois Institute of Technology (Chairman of Mechanical Engineering, 1940-43), and Institute of Gas Technology (Director, 1943-45).

Yellott enjoyed a career of distinguished accomplishments. In 1954, he became one of the founders of the Association for Applied Solar Energy in Phoenix, Arizona. He also developed a graduate program in solar energy at Arizona State University. Further cementing his place as a pioneer in the field of solar energy, he founded John Yellott Engineering Associates in 1958. Over the years, Yellott’s work resulted in more than 50 patents as he invented and published in the field of sun-control devices.
