What are the hours of ARC?

In Spring and Fall semester, we are open Monday thru Thursday, from 10 am - 8pm. On Fridays, we are open from 10 am - 3 pm. On Sundays, we are open from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. During Summer semester we are open Mon thru Thu 11 am - 3 pm.

How do I know a tutor is available?

If you want to make sure a tutor is available in your subject area, you can view the tutor schedules. You can also call our main line at 312.567.5216. If you come to the ARC, we have a large bulletin board with the tutor schedules, and placards are on every table. Business cards are also available from every tutor with tutor schedule QR code. Monitors at the front desk are available to answer any questions related to schedules.

How often can I come to the ARC?

You can visit the ARC as often as needed.

Do I need to schedule an appointment?

No appointment is necessary. Although, ARC is working to create appointment slots for few subjects.

Will the ARC privately tutor me?

Due to the drop-in system, ARC tutors work with all students in a given subject area. Tutors work one-on-one when possible, and in small groups during peak times.

Can I drop off my homework for a tutor to check?

No. Tutors will not work on any document or problem without a student present. The goal of peer tutoring is to work together, so a student gains a solid understanding of course concepts.

Do you tutor online?

We do not currently tutor online, but it is an avenue we are exploring.

How much does tutoring cost?

Tutoring is free to all current IIT students.

How can I schedule an exam review?

The class professor or a student in the class can request exam reviews at the ARC. Please give us at least one week notice prior to the test day, so we can schedule a room and a tutor to run the session. Review sessions typically run for two hours, in the evening.

Can I get help in more than one course?

Yes, you can! We offer tutoring in most course disciplines. All tutors are located in the same room and it is very easy to get help from several tutors at the same time.

Who are the tutors?

Peer and professional tutors are employed by the Academic Resource Center on a part-time basis. A peer tutor is a student who is currently enrolled at IIT who demonstrates a competence in a particular course of study and who has a high grade point average.

A professional tutor has at least a bachelor’s degree in a related subject and demonstrates competence in explaining course concepts. In addition, the professional tutor has strong interpersonal skills and some experience in working with diverse learning styles and physical challenges.

How do I prepare to get the most out of tutoring?

To get the most out of your tutoring sessions:

Give yourself enough time

Come prepared with specific questions

Do not wait until the last minute

Be thoroughly prepared

Can I try different?tutors?if I?want to hear a different perspective?

Yes. It is a good idea to come before you are in a crisis mode to try out a variety of tutoring styles. We have a diverse group of tutors who work as a team. Try out several tutors until you find one that suits your learning style. We provide opportunities to give feedback on tutors.
