    IntroARCH: Graduate Preparatory Course

    July 30 - August 11, 2012

This course is designed to prepare students for the graduate architectural studio sequence at IIT. It is highly recommended for students embarking on the 3-year professional Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture degrees (those without prior architectural studio experience) and is recommended for students embarking on the 2-year M.Arch with Advanced Standing. The course is also open to those who are not currently seeking a degree but are interested in pursuing architectural graduate studies in the future.

The emphasis of the course is on the fluid integration of manual and digital modes of representation into a cohesive process – a skill set essential for navigating the architectural studio. Concepts and techniques covered will be the foundational skills of the architect; the various modes of freehand drawing, imaging, descriptive and analytic orthographic projection; and architectural model-making.

The course is comparable to a design studio in sequence and rigor. It will give inexperienced students a working familiarity with the strategies, concepts, and techniques that form the backbone of architectural design studio work, and hone the skills of the experienced. Individual instruction will accommodate each student’s level of expertise.

The course is built around a series of design studio projects that integrate skills workshops, drawing and discussion sessions, concept and process tutorials, and reviews with visiting critics. Supporting components of the program include visits to local architectural offices, faculty guest lectures, and field trips exploring Chicago’s rich architectural milieu.

    Schedule: July 30 - August 11, 2012
Monday - Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm, Thursday evenings until 7 pm.
