    LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR

The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) College of Architecture invites applications for a tenured/tenure track faculty position within the Master of Landscape Architecture program. The position will commence in Fall 2012. In addition to the MLA degree, the College offers professional architecture degrees, post-professional studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture.

The study of landscape architecture topics within IIT emerged from the collaboration of Alfred Caldwell and Mies van der Rohe on curriculum matters and on projects such as the IIT campus in Chicago and Lafayette Park in Detroit. The culmination of that legacy is Chicago’s first and only Program of Landscape Architecture, founded in 2006 and accredited in 2010. Reflecting a deep and abiding commitment to improve and sustain the beauty and performance of the urban public realm, and building on the program’s partnerships with the renowned Chicago Botanic Garden and Chicago’s extensive design community, the program is focused on regenerating urban and ecological systems through the intersection of site and community design, eco-technologies, history, theory, and a rigorous knowledge of plants. The program shares the College of Architecture’s broader mission, which is defined by design excellence, technical expertise, advanced professional practice, and respect for design’s contributions to society and community.

In addition to teaching innovative graduate level design studios, lecture courses, and seminars, the selected candidate will contribute to the program’s rise to regional, national, and international renown through individually appropriate means, e.g., research and/or critically-minded practice. Providing service to both the program and the community is also expected. Applicants should relish the unique opportunities and challenges inherent in a young but steadily maturing program, a program that is situated in one of the world’s leading cities, in a region of profoundly abundant natural resources—the Great Lakes Basin.

The teaching needs of the program are varied, but include the following fields of knowledge and expertise:  Landscape architecture design theory; urbanism, infrastructural landscapes, and brownfield reclamation strategies; and media-representation methodologies (analog and digital, GIS, advanced mapping techniques, video).

Candidates must hold a professional degree in landscape architecture (MLA, BLA).  Advanced degrees reflecting accomplished research (PhD, DDes, etc.) and/or a record of distinguished landscape-based practice are desired. An outline of current and/or potential research initiatives is required, as is evidence of noteworthy teaching.

    How to Apply

The first-stage application for candidacy must include a cover letter describing the areas of interest in teaching, research, and/or critically-minded practice; curriculum vitae; a maximum of six (6) pages of design work, research work, and/or studio teaching; and three academic or professional references. Please provide materials in hard-copy format for this submission. Email, CDs, DVDs, and web-based applications are not being accepted at this time. The review of applications will begin November 1 and will continue until the position is filled.
