Monica Chadha is an architectural designer and educator based in Chicago whose work focuses on expanding the conversation about public interest design. Three years ago, she co-founded Converge:Exchange, an organization which brings together professionals, community groups and activists to share experiences about innovative design strategies applied to the built environment. She is currently developing ImpACT (Detroit): a partnership with Dan Pitera and the Detroit Collaborative Design Center (University of Detroit Mercy), which will provide comprehensive design, environmental, social and economic development services to communities in Detroit. ImpACT Detroit will also serve as a laboratory and incubator to develop a similar organization in Chicago dedicated to using design rooted in community involvement to revitalize urban neighborhoods.
Ms. Chadha was previously a project manager at Studio Gang Architects and Ross Barney Architects. Her professional work includes the College of DuPage Early Childhood Center, Champaign Public Library (2009 AIA Chicago Design Excellence Award), University of Minnesota Duluth’s Civil Engineering Building (LEED Gold, 2011 AIA COTE Award), City Hyde Park Chicago (mixed-use residential), and Kennedy King College, Chicago (2009 CNDA Award).
She has presented at several conferences and has most recently been published in Reveal, Princeton Architectural Press 2010. Ms Chadha received her Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Architecture from the University of Waterloo, Canada. She was recognized as a 2010 Emerging Leader by the Design Futures Council.
Ms. Chadha has been an adjunct assistant professor at IIT for the last five years. She is currently leading a community engagement design studio focused on Bronzeville. The "Urban Activator" studio focused on developing concepts for revitalizing 43rd Street. One of these students, Maria de la Torre from Columbia, dedicated her time to developing several provocative and helpful concepts for The Forum.
