Associate Professor John Ronan designed a 42,000-square-foot charter school, Gary Comer College Prep, in Chicago's impoverished Grand Crossing neighborhood. Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin hailed the building's exterior, made of perforated stainless steel with blocks of shiny chartreuse paneling, as "ruggedly handsome." 1 of 2

Skylights and glass interior walls continue the bright, open feel. Kamin says the new school, where classes began in August 2010, serves as "a beacon of optimism" for residents of Grand Crossing. 2 of 2

Associate Professor John Ronan was awarded the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design for Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory School. Christ the King is the first Catholic school to open on Chicago's West Side in 80 years. 1 of 2
