Illinois Institute of Technology Nomination Guidelines for the
2008 Julia Beveridge Award

About the Award
The Julia Beveridge Award is named for an extraordinary woman who served as the Librarian of Armour Mission and as the first Registrar of Armour Institute. Widely recognized for her contributions to the Armour Mission and for her strong leadership, Mrs. Beveridge worked with neighborhood children, instilling in them a love of books. She also began a manual training program in which her students learned practical skills such as woodcarving, tile making, sketching, mechanical drawing, and design. Mrs. Beveridge's devotion to students and her lifelong commitment to nurturing the talent of young women and men secured her reputation as a consummate educator. The annual presentation of this award is intended to recognize the importance of such commitment to IIT and the community, and to evoke the memory of all the Mrs. Beveridge exemplified as a teacher, administrator, and human being.

Eligibility
Eligibility is limited to the women of IIT who serve as: faculty, staff, trustees, friends of the University, and alumnae who fit any number of criteria listed below:

  • Has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the university. This may be represented in many ways: commitment to elevating the status of her unit, continuously assisting other women on campus or the community at large; promoting and advancing the recruitment, retention, and upward mobility of women; participating and assisting in the establishment of career or academic mentoring for young women; or serving as an exceptional role model.
  • Has made significant contributions to her profession through the dissemination of knowledge, research, teaching, and public presentations.

Eligibility
The nomination package should include:

  1. A completed Nomination Application that can be found at http://www.iit.edu/beveridge
  2. A letter of nomination, to be completed online, that addresses:
    • The exceptional contributions of the candidate to the University community, profession, and society at large.
    • Highlights of the nominee's achievements in mentoring, creative/artistic, social activity, research, or scholarly, and if applicable, national and international reputation, distinguished role in education and mentoring with emphasis on highlighting impact on future generations of women.
  3. The nominator must notify the nominee of their intent to nominate. 

A nomination application and letter is required for consideration. Individuals who do not receive an award in a given year are eligible for re-nomination. However, a new nomination package must be submitted. Nomination files are not retained for reconsideration in future years. Self nominations will not be accepted.

Review and Selection Criteria
A committee composed of distinguished women faculty, staff, students, and past award recipients from across the University will review the nominations and select winners from five categories: Faculty, Staff, Alumnae, Student’s Choice, and Friend of IIT. The criteria for selection are

  • Contributions to the University, profession, and the wider community.
  • Quality of the nominee's achievements, with emphasis on originality, imagination, and innovation, as well as local, national, and international distinction and reputation.
Deadline and Notification
All nominees will be notified of their nomination by mail. The nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2008, and addressed as follows:
