IN-TECH/IBEW 134 - Continuing Education for IBEW Members
Sharing a mutual interest in providing the electrical industry with a highly skilled workforce, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 134 and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) of the City of Chicago joined forces over fifty years ago to create the Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust (EJATT). In turn, the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute (IN-TECH) was established as the premier apprenticeship education center for Local 134 electricians.
Graduates of the IN-TECH program now have the opportunity to continue their education and transfer into the Bachelor of Industrial Technology and Management (BINTM) program at Illinois Institute of Technology. The BINTM program is designed to prepare technical specialists for managerial positions in industry. Students obtain a broad knowledge of current technologies and the management abilities required for a overseeing a range of industrial operations. IBEW/IN-TECH students are well served to pursue a professional specialization in Industrial Facilities, which consists of taking four courses focused on facilities and construction management.
Obtaining the BINTM degree requires the transfer of 60 credits from an accredited college and completion of 66 credits at IIT, for a total of 126 credits. Most students attend on a part-time basis (taking 2 or 3 courses per semester) and finish the program in about four years, however students may proceed through the program at their own pace. Review admission requirements at www.iit.edu/cpd/intm/programs/BINTM_admission.shtml.
To support the continuing education of IN-TECH graduates, the IBEW/NECA Tuition Reimbursement Program was created to assist members with tuition costs. This program will cover 50% of tuition costs for a maximum of three courses (9 credits) per calendar year. An application is required to confirm program eligibility and a request for reimbursement must be submitted at the start of each semester in which assistance is desired. Eligible students must obtain a "C" or better in all supported courses. More details on this program are offered in the scholarship brochure.
