    Credit for Continuing Education (CEU)
All professional learning programs offered through the School of Applied Technology of Illinois Institute of Technology award Continuing Education Units (CEU). The Professional Engineering Review awards 2.0 CEU for EI or PE; 3.0 CEU for EI and PE. This will be recorded as a part of the participant's permanent record with IIT. IIT defines a CEU as 10 contact hours of participation and follows internationally accepted criteria and guidelines established by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).

    Purpose of Professional Registration

Professional registration is recognition by the State of attaining a level of knowledge of the principles and practice of engineering. Generally, state registration as a professional engineer is important for those who practice engineering for the general public and/or for the government. Consulting engineering firms, regulated industrial concerns and other organizations dealing with public safety often require registration for responsible engineering positions. A registered professional engineer receives a certificate of registration and is authorized to affix an official embossed seal containing his/her name and registration number to engineering documents of record.

Education and experience in engineering are prerequisites for taking the examinations used to qualify candidates.

Engineer Intern (EI) status is obtained by those meeting education and experience requirements and who pass an examination on the Fundamentals of Engineering. Those meeting the EI requirements and a second examination on Principles and Practice, qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer (PE). It is possible for qualified individuals to take both examinations on successive dates and obtain PE status directly.

    Course Registration

To assure space and timely availability of texts, please register at least one month in advance. Space is limited and will be reserved in the order of registration applications received. You may register online, or contact the Office of Professional Development office at 630.682.6035 or peei@iit.edu.

    Exam Information

    Nature of Examination
The Engineering Intern (EI)/Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam consists of two four-hour segments of multiple-choice questions, some requiring calculations. The AM segment covers the general areas of engineering. The PM segment now allows for an additional general exam or a choice of six different discipline-specific engineering exams: Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial or Mechanical. The FE exam is closed book except for the NCEES Reference Manual provided by the state on site.

Exam formats vary for the Professional Engineer (PE)/Principles and Practice exams. Sessions consist of a morning (breadth) exam and afternoon (depth) exam session which must be completed on the same day.

All exams are open book with restrictions.

For additional details about the format of the Fundamentals and Professional exam, visit the National Council of Examiners' Web site at http://www.ncees.org/. For specific information regarding the Fundamentals exam, visit http://www.ncees.org/Exams/FE_exam.php and for the Principles and Practice exam, visit http://www.ncees.org/Exams/PE_exam.php.
