About
The heart of IIT, the College of Science and Letters has roots that date to the 1890s – when predecessor schools Armour Institute and Lewis Institute were formed.
Today, CSL serves nearly 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students who focus in the sciences or letters, while providing core classes for nearly every IIT undergraduate, through six departments: Applied Mathematics; Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences; Computer Science; Humanities; Mathematics and Science Education; and Social Sciences.
CSL differs from many other colleges of science and letters in that all programs are grounded in science and technology – even humanities, education, and social sciences – as befits our position within IIT, the Midwest’s premier science, engineering and technology university.
CSL attracts bright, enterprising faculty and students with an entrepreneurial environment, international flair, and proximity to the “urban lab” of Chicago.
Students are encouraged to explore their interests, cross disciplinary lines and otherwise satisfy their intellectual curiosity as they prepare for the future.
Opportunities in internationally recognized research are available throughout CSL, even for undergraduates.
