Prof. Fasshauer appointed to AMS Menger Prize Committee

Associate Professor Greg Fasshauer has been appointed to the American Mathematical Society Menger Prize Committee for a three-year term beginning in June 2008. The Menger Prize Committee is responsible for evaluating entries to the math competition held at the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world's largest science fair for pre-college (grades 9-12) students.

Fasshauer, the Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Applied Mathematics department, is an advocate for strong undergraduate education and has been faculty co-sponsor of IPRO 330: Science Fair Extravaganza, an online resource for Chicago Public Schools students participating in science fairs.

The AMS Menger Prize is funded by a generous gift from the family of Karl Menger, one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th Century and professor in the IIT Department of Mathematics from 1946-1971. Menger had a passion for undergraduate research and rigorous mathematics education, and this award recognizes the best students in high school mathematics and encourages them to pursue mathematics-related studies in college.
