Student Research
Both graduate students and undergraduates at IIT participate in mathematics research. Besides being interesting and exciting, it is a valuable part of one's mathematical education, especially for undergraduates that are considering graduate school.
Students get involved in research by speaking to faculty, so it is good to participate in seminars, come to the Math Tea (see calendar for dates), and speak up in class.
Graduate Research
All graduate students participate in our research seminars and reading groups. There is a poster session for graduate students held by our department each spring, and winners go on to participate in the IIT poster session. Every Ph.D. candidate writes a thesis, and M.S. candidates in applied mathematics also write theses. There is an AM department scholarship to support research, as well as faculty grants and support for travel.
Undergraduate Research
Faculty have supervised undergraduate research projects, and undergraduates at IIT have also contributed to ongoing faculty research projects. The students present their work in various places. For example, Mike McCourt and Marta Bastrzyk presented posters at IIT research day, and took 1st and 2nd place in the Undergraduate Division. Angeliki Ermogenous and James Pierce spoke at University of Dayton Undergraduate Mathematics Day, and Angeliki also published in the proceedings. James also gave talks at CAURS and at Chicago-area seminars. A small group of students worked on a version of the game, "Clue", and presented their results at a special Math Club event.
Several students (including Jon Beagley, Kevin Ventullo, James Pierce, Mike McCourt, Chad Johnson, and Danny Chong) have participated in Research Experiences for Undergraduates over the summer. Jon Beagley also participated in a semester-long research/study experience at PSU. These students often present their work at conferences as well as at departmental seminars and colloquia.
