    Curriculum Vitae

    Research & Major Accomplishments

My research focuses on the chemistry and biochemistry of the oxidant, singlet molecular oxygen, 1O2. Using generation methods developed at atmospheric pressure I am studying the gas-phase reactions of 1O2 with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as a possible source of environmental carcinogens. I am also interested in the biological effects of singlet oxygen. Having demonstrated the cytotoxity and genotoxity of 1O2 I am seeking to identify the sites and mechanisms of the 1O2 cytotoxity.

The mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) transformations are also of interest. The photo-oxidation of PAH on model particulate is being studied to determine the oxidants including 1O2 responsible for these transformations.
