    Research & Major Accomplishments

The focus of our research group is on the development of new chemical reactions for solving regiochemical and stereochemical problems for the total synthesis of biologically active natural products. First, a target molecule is chosen based on its unique chemical structure and biological activity. The molecule is then systematically disconnected into commercially available building blocks (chemicals) by the process of retrosynthetic analysis. The building blocks are then put together in the laboratory by chemical reaction eventually leading to the target molecule - hopefully, in higher yield than what nature could produce. Representative target molecules include the HIV inhibitor, conocurvone and quinone alkaloids including aulosirazole The development of new synthetic methods which will have wide applicability in the pharmaceutical and materials industry, including the development of new palladium catalyzed reactions, are also major areas of research in our group.
