    Research & Major Accomplishments

My research interest focuses on the development and application of novel materials, tools and methods to enable researches in bioscience that can’t be achieved using conventional biological tools and/or methods. In specific, the research in my group harnesses the advancements in molecular characterization methods such as probe scanning microscopy, surface engineering with new bio-conjugate chemistry, and molecular manipulation via photochemistry and nano-processing to examine the biological systems on the nanometer scale, which will lead to the clarification of the mechanism of a biological event at molecular level.

    On-going research projects include:

    • Examine the substrate effect on the growth of different type of cell
    • Probe the turn-on signal in human embryonic stem (hES) cell differentiation
    • Engineer the extracellular matrix for effective hES cell self renewal and differentiation
    • Develop novel methods to understand the cell response to bio-agents at the single cell level
    • Align carbon nanotubes for sensor application
