Computer Science
The CS Department at IIT is one of the top 10 producers of Master’s degrees in the U.S. (according to Computing Research News). IIT has one of the largest and oldest Computer Science departments in the Chicago area, and with over 500 students, CS is the largest department in the College of Science and Letters.
Students learn more theory than at some schools — algorithms, data structure, optimization, operating systems, languages, and other abstractions. They also get real-project experience through class projects and IPROs. The result is graduates who can think critically, innovate, and develop new solutions, with a practical approach for getting things done.
Research: IIT students work with our faculty on world-class research in areas that include algorithms; computer education; computational geometry; computational linguistics; concurrent programming; databases; embedded systems; information retrieval; parallel, distributed, and scientific computing; scalable computing; software engineering; visual computing; wireless and optical networks; and network algorithms, modeling and traffic analysis.
Education: IIT students can earn degrees at all levels; they can also study for graduate certificates, take accelerated courses, or do non-degree study. Our faculty includes award-winning instructors, and students have rated the department’s teaching as among the best at the university. For part-time students, we offer convenient evening classes. For long-distance students, we offer most graduate courses via closed-circuit TV and/or streaming internet video through IIT Online: You can live anywhere and get a Master’s degree in CS.
Our Graduates: IIT graduates and students work for such employers as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Motorola, and Wolfram Research. Our co-op/practical training students have earned reviews such as “Far exceeded our expectations,” “Extremely helpful to our company” and “Has never let me down.” Undergraduates interested in research have gone on to earn Ph.D.’s from IIT and other universities.
