Randal Bryant on Computing at CMU

Randal E. Bryant visited the Department of Computer Science on June 23rd to meet faculty and discuss computing at IIT and Carnegie Mellon University. Bryant is the dean of the School of Computer Science at CMU and University Professor of Computer Science. IIT CS Department Professor and Chair Xian-He Sun hosted the meeting.
In a lively and wide-ranging discussion, Bryant and the IIT CS faculty discussed the history and development of computer science at both schools and the common challenges of recruiting, teaching, organizational structure, and research.
IIT and CMU share a strong historical bond through Herb Simon, Economics Nobel Laureate. Simon was a professor of political science at IIT for seven years before leaving in 1949 to join the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now CMU) where he helped found the School of Computer Science and the field of artificial intelligence.
