NRC Ranking Puts IIT in First Tier of CS Graduate Programs
NRC has recently completed a ranking of Computer Science Ph.D. programs. The complete report can be found at http://sites.nationalacademies.org/PGA/Resdoc/index.htm. This report was last generated in 1993, and although it is not generated very often, it is more detailed than the yearly U,S, News & World Report rankings.
In the latest ranking (2006), IIT received between 65 and 99 using a 5th and 95th percentile ranking for the R-ranking and 74 to 109 for the S-ranking, out of 126 schools ranked; note that not all schools with Ph.D. programs were ranked. This ranking has improved from 1993, when IIT was ranked 91 out of 108 schools; the 1993 study can be found at http://archive.cra.org/statistics/nrcstudy2/rankcs.html. A summary of the latest NRC CS rankings is available in html and xls format.
It is worth noting how IIT compares with the other universities in the Chicago area. The Northwestern University has been ranked 42/73 and 26/69, while University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) ranked 62/99 and 50/93. It is worth noting that UIC, which has a much larger CS program, ranked nearly identical to IIT in the R-ranking. DePaul University, which has a Ph.D. CS program, did not make the top 126 schools nationally.
