Master of Computer Science With A Specialization in Business
33.6 credit hours
The Master of Computer Science with a Specialization in Business is designed to help Computer Science professionals extend and deepen their technical and practical knowledge of the field while introducing themselves to core topics in modern business practices. Learning some of the basic language of business can help practitioners communicate with business analysts, nontechnical managers, and users of software systems.
Courses for the MCS/Business degree program are taken from the Computer Science Department and IIT Stuart School of Business. To complete the program students must satisfy general Master of Computer Science requirements and also take four specialization courses:
- MBA 510: Financial and Managerial Accounting
- MBA 520: Organizational Behavior
- MBA 530: Managerial Economics
- One other advisor-approved 500-level course offered by the Stuart GSB for their MBA program (MBA, ACCT, EBUS, ECON, etc).
- (With advisor approval, students who have already taken MBA 510, 520, or 530 or their equivalents can substitute other courses.)
Note that IIT Stuart offers courses on a quarter schedule, not a semester schedule. Students should study the course schedules and calendars at IIT Stuart → Programs to find out when business courses are offered and when to register for them. A student in the program can take no more than two MBA courses per quarter. Stuart GSB does not offer courses online, so students must take their business courses at the IIT Downtown Campus in Chicago.
Admission to the MCS program is a sufficient requirement for admission to the MCS/Business program; in particular, students are not required to take the GMAT, nor are they required to take extra prerequisites before taking any introductory business courses. Students must, however, file a Program of Study specifying the MCS/Business before registering for any business courses. Before registering for each business course, a student should make a request to the Director of the MCS/Business program (Dr. Jim Sasaki), who will check the student's program of study and then ask the Stuart GSB to let the student register.
For purposes of the Program of Study, business courses are treated as CS-Related Transfer Courses. Each business course counts as 3.6 quarter credit hours = 2.4 semester credit hours. Because the general MCS program requires at least 24 semester credit hours of CS or CS Professional courses, the MCS/Business program requires a minimum of 24 + 4 * 2.4 = 33.6 semester credit hours to complete. A student whose bachelor's degree is not in Computer Science is required to take an additional 3 hours of CS or CS Professional courses, for a total of 36.6 semester credit hours.
