Master’s Students Share Insights on Summer Internship Experience

Wondering how a summer internship might help you in your studies? Internships are a great way to augment the classroom experience and finding the right one can be a valuable stepping stone in your career. Two of our master's students, Ryan Perzynski and Ruth Zinsmeister, have internships this summer in the field of technical communication.

Ryan Perzynski (M.S., IARC) is working as a Data Analysis Intern at the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) - a department that handles Medicaid and Child Support claims. When asked about the internship, Perzynski said, "I am gathering specific data which can be used in a larger context - mainly to show trends regarding Medicaid spending in the State of Illinois. I am learning about SQL and database structure, which are both relevant to the program at IIT." Perzynski found the internship on IIT's Career Management Center web page. "HFS was looking for someone who has a background in both writing and some technical database knowledge — so it has been a good fit. I have enjoyed the experience and have been able to expand on some of the things that I have learned so far at IIT," Perzynski said.

Ruth Zinsmeister (M.S., IARC) has a 10-week summer internship which she applied for through Deloitte's website. She is working with the DTTL Global Office of Information Management. "The team I am a part of is called Collaboration, Knowledge, and eCommunications. The projects we work on are related to the internets and intranets for Deloitte and mobile design for these sites," Zinsmeister said. She also said that although she's had no previous hands-on experience in the field, the internship is a good fit: "I am enjoying the internship because the coursework we had was very relevant to what I'm working on. I have had to learn several different CMS systems and use the HTML and mobile knowledge I learned in Web Design. I've also used document design concepts in working on a short instruction manual."
