IIT Ethics Bowl Team Places Second in Midwest Regional Competition

IIT's Ethics Bowl team placed 2nd in the Upper Midwest Regionals at the University of Wisconsin at Madison on December 1. Their efforts qualified them for the National Ethics Bowl to be held in San Antonio, Texas in February 2008. Coached by Professor Robert Ladenson, team members Elena Davis, Linda Goldstein, Tim Nuccio, and Julia Rybakova won two of three arguments in cases covering topics such as intelligent design, the destruction and preservation of the 10-story-high Buddha statues in Bamyan, Afghanistan, and corporate sponsorship of sports teams.
The competition is structured so that participating teams argue cases specifically chosen to represent ethical dilemmas with no clear solution, or many possible solutions. Points are awarded for arguing with clearly defined and valid points of ethical support for a course of action, not necessarily for arguing the "correct" position.
Ladenson created the Ethics Bowl competition in 1993, and in 1997 the competition went national with the aid of a grant from Sears-Roebuck and the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. This year 89 schools will take part.
