HOPOS Journal on Schedule for Inaugural Issue

Philosophy Professor Warren Schmaus has been busy coordinating reviews for the new publication HOPOS: The Journal of the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science. With help from tech comm graduate student Brenna Scurlock, Schmaus has been working closely with the publisher, the University of Chicago Press, to get the journal ready for its inaugural issue in April/May 2011.

Schmaus is serving as the new journal's book review editor, a position that involves finding new literature relevant to the history of philosophy of science community and locating scholars with the right subject-area knowledge to review it. In addition to coordinating reviews, Schmaus and Scurlock have been organizing the HOPOS database of over 400 society members so that reviewers can be easily selected according to their area of study.

Announced in early March 2010 by the University of Chicago Press, the HOPOS journal began its journey to publication in 2006. The journal will serve as forum for the many members of the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science, which was born at a Philosophy of Science Association meeting in Minneapolis in 1990. What began as an interest group evolved quickly into something much bigger—the HOPOS 2006 conference in Paris was such a success that the idea of a journal seemed highly likely. A formal launch event will take place at the June 2010 HOPOS meeting in Budapest, Hungary.

The HOPOS journal, which will appear in online and print, will publish original research articles along with reviews of current history of philosophy of science literature. With no other current publications addressing the history of philosophy of science, the HOPOS journal will have its own niche in an area exhibiting a recent growth in research.

The journal is based out of Merrimack College, where editor Rose-Mary Sargent is a professor of philosophy. Co-editors for the journal include Menachem Fisch, Tel Aviv University; Don Howard, University of Notre Dame; and Laura Snyder, St. John's University.
