IIT High School Transformation Science Instructional Coach

Introduction: The Chicago Public School High School Transformation (HST) is focused on building capacity for powerful classroom instruction in science classrooms. The strategy centers on teacher improvement by building a holistic “Instructional Development System (IDS)” that is focused on a comprehensive curriculum design and facilitated by expert, flexible coaching. IIT is hiring instructional science coaches to work with teachers in the 2008-09 school year.
Working with IDS Teachers: IIT IDS science coaches will work for the Illinois Institute of Technology to enable a highly targeted teacher development process that responds to needs in specific classroom situations and recognizes the personal aspects of instructional improvement. Specifically, IDS coaches will:
- Spend four days per week in and around classrooms, partnering collegially and responsively with a cadre of about 15 teachers who will be teaching in the same IDS.
- Probe teachers for deeper thinking regarding decisions about lessons and students interactions, including the use assessment data to evaluate and respond to student needs.
- Be supportive of the principal’s leadership position and leadership processes in each school.
Qualifications: IDS coaches should have substantial successful experience as teachers in an urban setting. Specific qualifications include:
- Strong general knowledge of successful teaching strategies, student learning processes, instructional design, classroom management, and assessment design.
- Strong content-area knowledge coupled with pedagogical content knowledge, especially for the IDS approach and course being supported.
- Ability to build strong relationships built on trust and mutual respect with principals, other coaches, and teachers.
- A passion for learning and self-development; serve as a role model for continuous professional development.
