IIT-MSI Quality Science Teaching Partnership
The Museum of Science and Industry and Illinois Institute of Technology’s Mathematics and Science Education Department have partnered to create a Science Endorsement Masters Program. The program offers practicing middle school teachers a Master of Science Education degree as well as middle school science endorsement. The MSI/IIT Quality Science Teaching Partnership is the first museum/university partnership of its kind in the nation to offer a Master of Science Education degree and a Middle-School Science Endorsement by attending classes both at the Museum and University. The MSI/IIT partnership builds on the strengths of each institution which leverages the content of MSI in combination with IIT’s inquiry-based and hands-on instructional practices.
Participating teachers will take middle school pedagogy courses at IIT. MSI will offer science content courses, at their professional development workshop series, where teachers learn topic-focused science activities at daylong sessions held throughout the year. The program provides teachers with lesson plans, materials to replicate activities in their classrooms, and a class field trip that includes funding for buses and an educational program for students. Teachers will develop a broad background in science that aligns with national science standards and local curriculum. IIT’s research in the effective delivery of science content and classroom instructional practices provides a foundation for the program’s structure and approach.
Master’s Program completion requires 33 graduate credit hours. To help remove barriers to participation, courses are offered at a reduced tuition rate to make it more accessible to teachers. All courses are priced at $1,200.00 per three credit hour course.
