MSED and the American Geological Institute provide a series of earth science on-line courses to K-12 teachers nationally.
Spring 2009 Courses
PLED 570: Introduction to Fossils – February 2009 through April 2009
This on-line course provides participants with a basic introduction to the principles of fossil study, including the significance of fossils and their relationship to other evidence about the Earth history and the development of living things. You will learn how scientists study the past, and the changes that have taken place on Earth and among living things. The main focus of the course will show how to teach basic concepts of fossil study (taphonomy) and past life (paleontology) in an inquiry based manner.

PLED 530: Physics I - February 2009 through April 2009
Physics is the subject that attempts to explain the basic underlying concepts behind how the universe works. Topics include mechanics, thermodynamics, waves, electricity and magnetism, astrophysics, relativity, quantum mechanics, and modern physics.

PLED 571: Introduction to Weather and Climate – April 2009 through May, 2009
Participants in this on-line course will learn how weather and climate are studied, using many online resources available from government agencies,
including real-time data, maps and satellite imagery. The main focus of the course will show how to teach basic concepts of weather study (meteorology) and climate study (climatology) in an inquiry based manner.

Tuition, Reduced Tuition and CPS Subsidies:
These graduate level, 3-semester-hour courses cost $1,000.00 each.
Eligible Chicago Public School middle school teachers receive a substantial discount through the CMSI program. CPS 6-8 grade teachers may receive a $700 CMSI subsidy, reducing the tuition to $300 per course.
