Friedman To Chair Radiation Safety Case Study Reports by IIT Masters in Health Physics Students at 2009 Health Physics Society Annual Meeting
Laurence F. Friedman, co-director of IIT's Master of Health Physics Program, will chair two sessions during the Health Physics Society annual meeting, July 12 - 16 in Minneapolis. At these sessions Dr. Friedman will present examples of case reports prepared by his students for his Case Studies in Health Physics course.
The student reports often are first-person accounts not available elsewhere, Friedman notes. Most of the students are mid-career professionals who are earning their masters to advance in their job.
One report is based on interviews by a veteran of the nuclear navy with the operators who were in the control room at Three Mile Island (TMI) during the accident, and his analysis of what happens to people under stress that causes them not to see the whole picture. Another is based on the TMI vessel investigation project and demonstrated how far the vessel was from failure. Dr. Friedman said he considers this the best-kept secret of the accident.
Other case studies will include an account of the cleanup after the Soviet Cosmos 954 satellite crashed in Canada, leaving a 500-mile-long path of contamination; analysis of the irradiator accidents in San Salvador and Israel and at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute; and more. Friedman also will demonstrate a computer game developed by an IPRO that simulates a contamination accident.
The IIT Master of Health Physics Program is a Professional Science Masters program that combines technical depth in radiation safety with classes in communication, analytical, and project management skills. More information...
