MSED To Receive Nearly $1.9 Million for Expanded Role in High School Transformation Project with CPS

Norman Lederman, professor and chair, Mathematics and Science Education, announced that the department will receive $1.88 million next year for its expanded role in the High School Transformation (HST) Project with the Chicago Public Schools. MSED will now partner 21 of 36 eligible schools and work intensely with CPS to help the district build its capacity to successfully teach science after the HSTP is complete.

MSED worked with seven schools in the project's first year, 11 in its second, and 20 in its third (this school year). The continued expansion is significant because the schools themselves pick their partner. The other two options are Loyola University/University of Illinois at Chicago or Northwestern University. MSED is now working with almost two-thirds of all the possible schools.

In the project's fourth year, MSED also will ensure that CPS can carry on its work by intensively training CPS personnel in its skills and approach, so that CPS can spread the MSED way throughout the district.

HSTP is a multi-year, $21 million project to improve high school curriculum and instruction in mathematics, language arts, and science, so all students in Chicago have access to a high-quality education that will prepare them for success in college and work. HSTP is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CPS, and the schools. It is one of the Gates Foundation's largest domestic education investments and one of the largest projects of its kind in the country.

MSED is working with schools on science education. In its approach, MSED works closely with each teacher, providing weekly instructional support and coaching and, with partners the Field Museum and Glencoe Publishing, offering significantly different curricula focusing on scientific inquiry and nature of science.
