Center for the Study of Ethics in the ProfessionsWhat is a scientist’s or an engineer’s responsibility to society? Is loyalty a moral virtue? What risks must be considered in developing net technologies? These are all questions that the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions (CSEP), directed by Vivian Weil, seeks to answer. Established in 1976 at IIT, CSEP was the first interdisciplinary center for ethics to focus on the professions and is known for its work on ethics in engineering, science, and related areas of business. CSEP maintains an online collection of professional ethics codes; holds the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl for students, now a national event; and has ongoing projects studying the ethics of emerging technologies such as biomedical engineering and nanotechnology. The center is a resource for integrating ethics into undergraduate and graduate curricula for both IIT faculty and other institutions.
