Center for Synchrotron Radiation Research and InstrumentationCan you imagine living in a world of corrosion–resistant materials? Have you ever wondered about the molecular forces behind muscle contraction? IIT researchers are investigating these topics and many others with technology provided by the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory, one the world’s most powerful synchrotrons—large machines that produce intense beams of X-rays, ultraviolet light, and other forms of radiation. Synchrotrons like the APS enable scientists to obtain information and conduct research on many different types of materials and are essential parts of the nation’s research infrastructure.
IIT’s Center for Synchrotron Radiation Research and Instrumentation (CSRRI), directed by Professor Thomas Irving, operates two beamlines on the APS. In partnership with other institutions, CSRRI is working on projects in biophysics, materials science, environmental science, and chemistry. Additionally, students are given the opportunity to work on research projects with CSRRI faculty. Located just outside Chicago, the APS is practically in IIT’s backyard.
CSRRI also maintains shared on-campus X-ray facilities for research and training. In its mission to promote educational activities, the center develops training programs and workshops, specialized courses, and summer sessions for IIT and the larger scientific community.
