Professional Master's Programs
Master of Chemistry in Analytical Chemistry
Illinois Institute of Technology offer a master's degree in Analytical Chemistry that can be completed almost entirely online. The program is designed primarily for chemists who would like to enhance their graduate education but with a focus on business and industry.
This professional science master's degree provides students with a solid foundation in sample preparation, separation science, spectroscopy, and method development. The curriculum includes courses essential for a scientific career in the business world: communication, statistics, industrial leadership, and business principles. Skill in these areas will help students be more competitive in today's job market.
According to Chemical & Engineering News, "Recruiters say that among the most coveted qualifications for analytical chemists at all degree levels is interdisciplinary training that includes…instrumentation savvy and strong communication skills," which is exactly what IIT's professional master's program provides. Aside from being in demand in a variety of work environments, analytical chemists also enjoy other benefits, including competitive salaries in an otherwise challenging market (see Bureau of Labor Statistics Report).
IIT's professional science master's degree in analytical chemistry is a non-thesis degree designed for chemists working in business, industry, education, government, military and non-profit agencies. It is for chemists who wish to become more effective leaders in the workplace.
One of the great advantages of IIT's program is that all of the courses in the curriculum may be taken online, and the average time to completion is only 2.5 years of part-time study. To earn the degree, students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 32 credit hours while maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0, and pass a final oral comprehensive exam administered on campus.
If your career goals do not require a full master's degree, you may be interested in completing a certificate in Analytical Methods Development, Analytical Spectroscopy, or Chromatography. The courses in these certificate programs are all graduate level courses belonging to the analytical chemistry professional science master's degree curriculum.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants must have completed two semesters of organic chemistry, one semester of analytical or quantitative chemistry, one semester of physical chemistry, and one semester of calculus. Strong preference is given to applicants who have work experience in a chemistry-related field.
Domestic students are required to hold a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a chemistry-related science with a GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 from an accredited U.S. institution of higher education. International students are required to hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. All applicants must submit their transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a $55 application fee, and a professional statement. Applicants for spring 2014 and beyond will be required to submit a resume no longer than two pages in length. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for all international students, domestic students with an undergraduate GPA between 2.5 and 3.0, or at the request of the admissions committee.
