Faculty Members Present at Spring 2012 Conferences
Professors in the Department of Social Sciences have presented their work at numerous conferences and venues during the Spring 2012 semester.Laura Hosman, assistant professor of political science, presented at the 53rd Annual Conference for the International Studies Association, the International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development, the 16th Annual Open for the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Association, and the 34th Annual Conference for the Pacific Telecommunications Council. Hosman gave seven presentations, including "Beyond the Design: Why the Ecosystem Matters in Technology for the Developing World," "The Prospects for Small Island Nations to Participate in the Global Information Age," and "Public-Private Partnership Innovations in ICT: The Role of Academia."
David Schalliol, visiting professor of sociology, discussed his work in an article for the Chicago Tribune, published on April 15th, 2012. Schalliol is documenting the demolition procedure for Chicago buildings in 2012.
Matthew Shapiro, assistant professor of political science, presented at the Annual Conference of the Midwest Political Science Association and the Annual Conference of the Western Political Science Association. He gave five presentations, including "Doing What Others Do: Norms, Science, and Collective Action on Climate Change," Everyday Politics: Engaging Chicago Politicians on Twitter," and "Northeast Asian Environmental Regimes: Challenges to Technology-Driven Coordination."
Ullica Segerstrale, professor of sociology, presented at Abo Akademi University, Finland with a discussion titled "The Westmark Hypothesis: A Model for Reconciliation of 'Nature' and 'Culture' Explanations?"
Christena Nippert-Eng, chair of the social sciences department and associate professor of sociology, discussed her work on privacy for JP Morgan Chase in a talk entitled "Anatomy of a Privacy Violation."
