Summer Activities
Professor Nippert-Eng just attended the American Sociological Association (ASA) meetings in Atlanta Georgia, August 13-17. She began her year-long term as Chair of the Communication and Information Technologies Section of the ASA and her new book was debuted: "Islands of Privacy," 2010 University of Chicago Press.Dr. Nippert-Eng also presented a paper for the Sociology of Culture Section, "Learning to Conceal: Children and the Management of the Private-Public Boundary," and served as discussant for a panel on "Work in the Academy" for the Organizations, Occupations and Work Section.

Professor Schalliol gave a talk entitled "What is the CHA? A Brief History of the Chicago Housing Authority and its Plan for Transformation" for a panel discussion entitled "Iron Red Tape: Bureaucracy and the Shape of the World" on the occasion of an investigation of the themes of "Bureaucratics," a large exhibition by internationally renowned photographer Jan Banning. It was the result of a collaboration between the University of Chicago's six centers for Area Studies (for East Asia, Eastern Europe and Russia/Eurasia, Latin America, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Center for International Studies), the France Center, the College of the University of Chicago, the Arts Council of the University of Chicago, and the Consulate of the Netherlands.

Professor Schalliol was invited to participate in a panel discussion entitle "Covering the City: Urban Reporting and Researching in the New Information Environment" with other academics and media professionals due to my dual roles as a visiting professor at IIT and Managing Editor of Gapers Block. The event was co-sponsored by the Great Cities Institute, Institute for Civic and Public Engagement, and Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy.

Professor Schalliol will give a talk entitled "The Durability of Disorder: Exploring Abandoned Buildings and Social Disorder Longitudinally" (with Danielle Wallace, Arizona State University) for the panel discussion entitled "Physical Environment and Informal Crime Control" at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology in San Francisco.
A photography book entitled "Migration" will be released in October by MWP that includes photographs from Professor Schalliol's Isolated Building Studies and Detroit series, along with work from a variety of celebrated photographers, including Edward Burtynsky and Dave Jordano.
