Scripps-Howard Newspapers - Principles and Practices for All Personnel

Adopted at a meeting of the Scripps-Howard editors in 1953; revised September 1976.

Following is the policy of the Scripps-Howard newspapers concerning outside work. junkets, political activities:

1. Prohibited:

  1. Paid work of any sort for any branch of the- government, any political organization, any candidate, any politician.
  2. Preparing or handling publicity for pay for anyone the employee might have occasion to deal with as a reporter or in editor.
  3. Doing correspondence for any direct competitor of his own newspaper or of any other Scripps-Howard newspaper.
  4. Participation by an employee in a prominent or leading role in party politics, in a way which could raise questions as to the paper's objectivity.

2. Permitted, but only on prior approval of the editor:

  1. Teaching, lecturing or speaking for pay.
  2. Regular or guest appearances on radio or television.
  3. Outside writing for magazines, trade publication &, house organs.
  4. Sale by photographers of prints, or by artists of their work, done for the newspaper.
  5. All outside work not included here must have prior approval.
  6. Any junket or trip on which the staff member's expenses are paid wholly or in part by someone other than the newspaper.

3. Gifts:
When gifts exceed the limits of propriety, they should be returned. We do not expect, and in fact discourage, gifts or free admissions in return for fair treatment in our columns.
