GENERAL: The AAAS has established a new Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility. The purpose of the award is to honor scientists and engineers whose actions, often at significant personal cost, have exemplified principles of scientific freedom and responsibility. The deadline for receipt of nominations is June 30, 1981. CONFERENCES: The Fourth National 1 Conference on Enforcement in occupational and Professional Regulation, entitled New Directions in Investigation and Enforcement, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana on June 15, 16 and 17. The Institute for Inter-professional Studies in Health Law, which is affiliated with the University of Houston College of Law and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, announces the Second Annual Workshop on Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Law. The Working Group on Ethics and Values of Public Responsibility, which was established in 1975 by the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration to determine the extent and the character of the problem of declining standards among governmental employees, announces a Round Table Conference to be held in Canberra, Australia, in July, 1981. The Hastings Center will present a workshop on Institutional Review Boards and Human Subjects Research July 12-18, 1981 at Colorado College, Colorado Springs. The goals of this workshop are twofold: (1J to provide participants with a broad background in ethical principles, such as beneficence, respect for persons, an distributive justice that underlie -an subjects research; and (21-to provide specific information and guidance in solving practical problems shared by all IRB's, whether they review medical or social science research. The Center for Philosophy and Public Policy and the Hastings Center will co-sponsor a Workshop on Ethics and Public Policy June 21 - 27, 1981 at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine. The workshop consists of three sections: (1) an analysis of three policy problems: military service; Mexican immigration; and risk and consent; (2) an examination of what is applied ethics and what it is capable of achieving, and (3) a look at public policy within a theoretical political framework. CALL FOR PAPERS: The Department of English and History of Southern Technical Institute, in conjunction with the Humanities and Technology Association, is sponsoring the fifth annual conference on the interface of the humanities and technology in Marietta, Georgia, October 22 – 23, 1981.
