Why Media Relations?

C&M’s media relations program raises IIT’s public profile as well as protects the university’s identity and image through positive, proactive and compelling publicity and storytelling in the news media. We’re your link to both mainstream news organizations and industry media. This includes newspapers, television, radio, magazines, newsletters, journals and the Internet.

Placing IIT Stories

Media relations staff offer story suggestions to reporters and editors. These “pitches” do not guarantee coverage. Because news organizations are inundated with requests for coverage from a variety of institutions and organizations, the IIT media relations team is selective about which stories to pitch. Our priorities are to seek coverage for people, events and projects that have an interesting angle or significant news-making element. The goal is always to make choices that will likely increase general awareness of IIT, its research, innovative people and programs.

Is your story newsworthy? Media relations considers these elements in determining which stories to pitch:

- Is it truly something new, dramatic or compelling?
- Does it affect people’s lives?
- If it’s a scientific discovery, how can it be presented to a non-scientific audience?
- Is there a passionate person who can speak about this story in an articulate, understandable manner?
- What makes this item unique? Interesting?
- Why should a reader or viewer care about this story?
- How does this story serve the profile and image of IIT?

We want you to keep us informed about your events, research, new programs and people. Please notify media relations immediately if a member of the news media has contacted you directly.

Crisis Communications

Media relations coordinates all media requests in the event of a crisis or other “breaking news” on campus. No member of the IIT community should speak with the media until they have consulted with media relations.
