Description of Services

Our in-house services include

  • strategic planning of your communication needs
  • professional editing (including editorial reviews)
  • writing for your publications
  • limited graphic design (including design reviews)
  • print bidding, contracting, and management

We also contract with other service providers, such as designers, writers, printers, and photographers.

In the event that your project cannot be handled through C&M, we will recommend reliable, reasonably priced vendors and serve as consultants for initiating the project.

For all publications, we follow the style guidelines of the IIT Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style and the graphic guidelines of the IIT Graphic Identity book . You may addressquestions to marlis.broadhead@iit.edu.

To Begin a Project

To request that C&M assist with a project, contact Rose Milkowski at milkowski@iit.edu or 7-3162 or Marlis Broadhead at marlis.broadhead@iit.edu or 7-3108.

You will be asked to fill out a Project Planning Worksheet , which will serve as a guide for the project. Next, we will schedule a meeting with you to discuss the project objectives, scope, and timeline.

The Production Process

The standard production process is as follows:

  1. C&M helps the client select the appropriate vendors and obtains estimates from the selected designer, printer, and photographer when applicable; for jobs costing more than $10,000, three bids must be obtained.
  2. The client approves the estimates and submits a requisition to purchasing to initiate the necessary purchase orders for each vendor. PLEASE NOTE: The vendor cannot start a project until a purchase order has been received.
  3. The client submits any copy and art to C&M, in electronic format when possible, and C&M shapes the copy and works with the designer.
  4. The client approves the copy and selects the design format.
  5. The printer delivers a proof for approval/alteration.
  6. C&M releases project to print, and it is delivered or mailed.

PLEASE NOTE: You will be asked to review your piece during the process, including looking at the edited copy and the design. Timely turnarounds will assist C&M in keeping your project on schedule.

Standard Timelines

Once you have approved the design and copy, you can expect at least six weeks' turnaround to delivery for most one- and two-color projects, and eight weeks for four-color and more complex pieces requiring additional outside services, such as photo shoots, die-cutting, and special binding.

Please Note: Schedules may need to be adjusted during the process, but the more deadlines that are missed, the greater the possibility that the delivery date will also be pushed back.

Editorial and Design Review Services

If you produce a job in-house or with a freelance designer, C&M can provide editorial reviews. This means that we can edit your manuscripts electronically or on paper or simply "audit" the effectiveness of a publication's content.

Please note: This is the service offered for proposals and other manuscripts that must be researched and created by subject matter experts.

Similarly, C&M can review the effectiveness of the graphic content of publications that you produce with freelancers or on your own.
