Admission to the Department of Chemical Engineering requires a B.S. degree in chemical or other engineering disciplines with a minimum of a "B" cumulative average. However, students with less than a B average, but higher than B in major chemical engineering courses, may be admitted as special students. For applicants with postgraduate training, records of both undergraduate and graduate work are considered. Students seeking admission are required to submit their fully completed application and all the supporting documents to the department office at the address given below. Normally students are asked to provide a certified copy of their transcripts, test scores (see "General Admission Requirements"), and at least three letters of professional recommendation. The department welcomes applications from international students.
The admission requirements are the same as those for students with an engineering degree. In addition, in order to provide a sufficient foundation, students holding a B.S. degree in chemistry, biology, or physics, with a proper mathematics background, must first successfully complete the following four undergraduate bridging courses before enrolling in most of the chemical engineering graduate courses: Material and Energy Balances (CHE 202), Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer Operations (CHE 301), Mass Transfer Operations (CHE 303), and Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (CHE 351).
All applicants are required to submit the test scores on both the aptitude and the advanced sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) prior to admission as a regular student. The advanced test may be taken in the student's undergraduate major. These tests are given regularly in the United States and abroad. Information about schedules can be obtained from: Graduate Record Examination, Box 555, Princeton, New Jersey 08540 U.S.A. (Tel. 609 771 7670). Students from nonEnglish speaking countries are also required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and obtain a score of at least 550. Further information on TOEFL can be obtained from: TOEFL, Box 899, Princeton, New Jersey 08540 U.S.A. Applicants should request that the results of both the GRE and the TOEFL be sent to:
