Energy, Environment, and Economics, the (E3) Program

The E3 Program has been established to respond to the rapidly changing needs of the energy industry by providing the interdisciplinary training required to produce a new breed of engineer_one who specializes in energy technologies and who understands the associated environmental issues and economic forces that determine technology choices. The objective of the E3 Program is to focus undergraduate and graduate engineering education and research on the critical role of energy supply and utilization, and the related environmental impacts on the global economy. It is designed for students pursuing degrees in chemical, mechanical and aerospace, or electrical engineering.

The E3 Program is part of the activities of the Energy + Power Center which is under the directorship of Professor Henry Linden. In addition to its research and educational activities, the Energy + Power Center is involved in the organization of the American Power Conference, the leading technical conference for the electric power industry.

E3 Research Program

The E3 research program is closely coordinated with the efforts of IIT Research Institute, IIT's contract R&D subsidiary. More than 30 Master's and Ph.D. degree students are conducting research under the supervision of E3 faculty members. Some of the major areas of research in the Chemical Engineering Department include:

E3 Graduate Curriculum

The graduate E3 specialization focuses on an interdisciplinary thesis in an E3 area for Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, and an interdisciplinary graduate project for the Master of Chemical Engineering (M.ChE.) degree. The curriculum consists of core courses in chemical engineering as well as specialization courses in the areas of energy sources, conversion, strategies, economics and related environmental issues.

Faculty

At present, 27 faculty members are involved with the E3 Program from the Armour College of Engineering and Science, the Stuart School of Business, and the ChicagoKent College of Law. Chemical engineering faculty include: H. Arastoopour, A. Cinar, D. Gidaspow, T. Knowlton, H. Lindahl, H. Linden, S. Parulekar, J. Selman, and D. Wasan.
