Professor Arastoopour's research interests are in the areas of multiphase flow, fluidization, powderization and agglomeration, flow in porous media, particle and material processing, and environmental engineering problems.

Currently his research focuses on the following areas:

This project includes simultaneous measurements of particle size, velocity, and concentration in twophase gas/solid and three-phase gas/solid/liquid systems using Laser Doppler Anemometry in fluidized bed and multiphase flow systems.

This project includes theoretical analysis and twophase flow measurement through low permeability, porous media at reservoir conditions.

The project includes: a) use of theoretical and experimental analyses of powderization and agglomeration of polymeric materials under high shear and normal forces; and b) experimental and theoretical analyses of polymers and solid fuels such as coal in fluidized bed systems.

This project includes the extension of the kinetic theory for cohesive particles and development of computer codes for cohesive particles flow behavior in material processing, circulating fluidized beds, and turbulent beds.

This project includes simultaneous conversion of NOx and SOx to nitrogen and sulfur using sorption or catalytic reactions.

These activities include: a) development of a process for manufacturing completely biodegradable materials from agricultural wastes; and b) study of the effect of particles on manufacturing of biomaterials such as an artificial knee.
