Education Tools and Software(Cinar)
Patients with Type 1 diabetes have to plan and regulate their food intake, exercise, and insulin injection/infusion. Patients with Type 2 diabetes and people with obesity need to plan their food intake and exercise. Software is developed to educate new patients about the variations of their blood glucose and insulin levels based on food and physical activities, by conducting dynamic simulations. The simulator is supplemented with a smart spreadsheet that can compute the carbohydrate, protein, total and saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium of each meal based on the selections made by the user. The web-based simulators and diet planning systems are based on software developed at IIT with NSF support for open-ended virtual experiments in biomedical education. Students, patients, and trainers can use the Web-based software universally. The software also includes insulin infusion by pumps that can be controlled “manually” by the user or with automated feedback control systems of various types.
