    Graduate Study Planning Guide

The purpose of this guide is to provide the information necessary for the successful completion of graduate study by a graduate student in Biomedical Engineering at IIT culminating in receiving a doctoral degree. There are many important (and sometimes confusing) elements and requirements that are part of this process: some of them are relevant to IIT, some are particular to the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and some are simply applicable to any PhD degree program. This guidebook will attempt to include all those different elements although it is important for readers to be aware that some information may have been inadvertently omitted. However, all attempts will be made to cover the necessary details for successful graduate study.

Who is this guidebook intended for? There are actually three target audiences to whom this book is aimed. First and foremost, PhD graduate students themselves are the primary audience for this information. It is expected that graduate students will use this information contained here to satisfy all the requirements and procedures that are part of their degree program. Students therefore should consult this Handbook to ensure that they are on-track with their degree study. Second, IIT faculty should use this information to provide appropriate guidance to their advisees and to also ensure that these students are following the appropriate procedures required by the department and university. Third, faculty outside the university who are providing the primary site and guidance for student research should use this Handbook to familiarize themselves with those parameters that will be mandatory for their IIT graduate students to follow.

Graduate study is filled with many different elements including, but not limited to, coursework, formal examinations, and research. Certainly each of these represents significant challenges. However, it is the desire of every member of the IIT faculty that its students succeed in their efforts and, furthermore, that they provide these students with the necessary tools for continued professional success after their degrees are received. If students or faculty have additional thoughts or recommendations for how to improve this Handbook, please do not hesitate to contact your advisor or Professor Mogul (Graduate Student Coordinator) with your suggestions.
