    ChBE Graduate Programs Overview

ChBE is pleased to offer numerous programs aimed at helping graduate students develop and enhance their knowledge and understanding of the principles of chemical engineering.

The following provides a qualitative description of the graduate degrees offered by the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (ChBE) at IIT.

    Doctor of Philosophy (PhD):
The PhD degree is a research-intensive degree that culminates with the publication of a doctoral thesis contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge. Upon completion of the PhD, students will be well prepared for a career in research as they will be capable of developing and supervising an independent research program. The residency for PhD students is typically 4-5 years. Please consult the IIT Graduate bulletin for specific details on the course and exam requirements associated with the PhD.

    Masters of Science (MS):
The MS degree is a course-based degree with a significant research component. The MS thesis also must contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge, but compared to the PhD is much less encompassing. Upon completion of the MS, students will be well prepared to participate in an independent research program. The residency for MS students is typically 2-2.5 years. Please consult the IIT Graduate bulletin for specific details on the course and thesis requirements associated with the MS degree.

    Master of Engineering (MAS):
The MAS degree is a course-based degree with an optional research component. For those unsure about a career in research, project-based research opportunities are offered. If successful, project-based work can be extended beyond one semester and may be expanded into a thesis suitable for the MS degree. The residency for MAS students is typically 1.5-2 years. Please consult the IIT Graduate bulletin for specific details on the academic requirements associated with the MAS degree.

    Notes on ChBE Admission Policies:

    • We are currently admitting new students to the PhD degree program. All students admitted to the PhD program will be offered tuition and stipend support. Those for which financial support cannot be offered will be denied admission to the PhD and automatically evaluated for the MS/MAS program. Possession of a master’s level degree is not required for admission to the PhD.
