    Faculty Achievements

    Three Armour College of Engineering professors were named recipients of the 2011 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Electrical and Computer Engineering Assistant Professors Yu Cheng and Kui Ren and Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Benxin Wu were honored for their exceptional work in their respective research areas.     Professor Emeritus J. Robert Selman
    was awarded the 2010 Grove Medal for his more than 30 years of contributions toward the development and success of fuel cell technology. The medal, given to Selman at the Fuel Cells Science & Technology Conference in October, is named after William Robert Grove, who developed the first fuel cell.

    Materials Engineering Professor Philip Nash  was named a fellow of ASM International, the United States-based materials information society. Nash was recognized for his research contributions in metallurgical thermodynamics and phase equilibria of metallic systems, and for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

    MMAE Associate Professor Boris Pervan  was named a fellow of the Institute of Navigation for his contribution to the advancement of differential GPS technology and integrity assurance, excellence as a teacher, and service to the institute.

    Assistant Professor Ralph T. Muehleisen,  director of the Miller Acoustics Laboratory and the architectural engineering programs at IIT Armour College of Engineering, was elected as a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America for his contributions to architectural acoustics and acoustics education.

    Professor Jafar Saniie, Walter and Harriet Filmer Endowed Chair Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, was elected as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for his contributions to ultrasonic signal detection, estimation, and imaging.

    Professor Yongyi Yang (M.S. AMAT ’92, Ph.D. EE ’94), in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received a $1.5 million grant to conduct breast cancer medical imaging research. This grant will help fund a longstanding line of research that will improve diagnosis and early detection of breast cancer.

    Senior Research Associate Kenneth Zdunek (Ph.D. EE ’91), in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was elected as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for his leadership in integrating voice and data communications in wireless networks.
