At precisely six months from my start, I can report that although I still have a lot to learn, I am having a great experience exploring IIT.  Having taught MMAE 100, Introduction to the Professions (ITP), I do know that the class of 2015 looks to be very good for all three of our undergraduate programs, aerospace engineering (AE), materials science and engineering (MSE) and mechanical engineering (ME).  My ITP students helped me understand why they came to IIT and also what they would like to accomplish.  It was a great start for me in getting to know IIT and IIT students.

On an almost daily basis, enthusiasm for making positive contributions is demonstrated by MMAE people.  MMAE graduate students not only contribute to our undergraduate program and our research efforts, but they also are interested in helping shape IIT’s future.  In their work with our faculty, MMAE graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and research associates are ensuring that the research awards and recognitions achieved by our faculty are realized.  Not surprisingly, I have also learned that our alumni are similarly found in positions of leadership and impact.

    Greetings from Chicago,

On my first day of service as Chair for the Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering I can reflect on the last several months wherein I have come to know the people of IIT, the Armour College of Engineering, and MMAE.  From the moment I applied for the job, I saw the chance to live and work in my favorite city at an institution founded on a principle of education for all as a dream opportunity.  I am looking forward to exciting new developments in MMAE as the department helps lead IIT’s "Many Voices, One Vision" strategic plan.

If you are new to MMAE or you have long been part of its history, I hope you will give me the opportunity to learn of your ideas and also to tap into your energies to help move this important program and its people to even greater accomplishments.

    Take care,
