    Research

    Characterization of the turbulence statistics and large energetic scales in urban environments with potential applications in pollutant dispersion problems, wind energy and micro aerial vehicles design. Understanding of the wind gusts (both in terms of amplitude and frequency) and the largest vortical structures typically found in urban areas is valuable to improving the design of the next generation of micro aerial vehicles.

    At the scale of the micro aerial vehicles, investigation of airfoil longitudinal gust response in separated vs attached flow (we generate wind gusts experimentally to better understand the lift/drag response of standard airfoils). Investigation of the separated flow response to single pulse-type actuation on a 2D airfoil in a steady stream will provide valuable information about the design of future actuators/controllers for micro aerial vehicles.

    Quantification of the wake characteristics of rigid and flexible airfoils undergoing harmonic pitch oscillation over a range of pitching amplitude and frequency. Addition of flexibility to wings (i.e. mimicking birds) has proven of great interest in terms of flight efficiency in specific conditions.
