Why haven't fuel cells replaced more traditional power technologies such as the internal combustion engine? The performance and efficiency of fuel cells are a major factor in that seemingly inevitable transition, and chemical engineering professor Donald Chmielewski is among the leading researchers in fuel cell performance. An advocate of environmentally conscious manufacturing and pollution prevention, Professor Chmielewski does not limit himself to research and university teaching. He mentors the development of middle and high school teachers through instructional units on fuel cells, hybrid vehicles and power plants in IIT's Research Experience for Teachers program.
